our Curriculum intent
At East Ardsley Primary Academy we want our curriculum to be vibrant, active and fun for the children. We use a topic based approach as we believe children learn best when their learning is in context and they are able to make connections between their learning in different subjects.
Every subject has a keen focus on vocabulary to give children the language they need to share their knowledge, and to identify and talk about the key skills they are learning in every subject, as well as across the curriculum as a whole.
We have carefully plotted out the learning the children need to undertake in every subject throughout their time in our school. We aim to build up the children’s knowledge and understanding of every subject; giving them the skills necessary to make good progress in each area.
To add interest and to make the children’s learning real we use a range of techniques and strategies including scenarios, visits and visitors. We like to put the children in the place of the historian, or artist to give them a clear understanding of what it means to study a subject and to think about how they might use the skills they acquire in the future.
Every subject in school has a Subject Leader who has an overview of that subject across the school and is able to work with teachers to support them in developing the curriculum and shaping the children’s teaching and learning to ensure it is effective.
By the time the children leave us at the end of Year 6 they have a broad knowledge of a range of subjects, a bank of skills pertinent to those subjects, and relevant vocabulary to ensure they are able to share their prior learning and are ready to study individual subjects as they move up to high school.
