We are a Growth Mindset school!

At East Ardsley Primary Academy we firmly believe that if a child has a Growth Mindset they will achieve more highly.  We aim to foster this mindset in all our children so that they develop personal skills and attitudes which will equip them for life.

What is a Growth Mindset?

Scientists are learning that people have more capacity for lifelong learning and brain development than they ever thought.  Of course, each person has a unique genetic code.  People all start with different temperaments and aptitudes but it is clear that experience, training and personal effort takes them the rest of the way.

Research by Carol Dweck, a Developmental Psychologist at Stanford University, says that there are two types of mindset – fixed and growth.  It is believed that some people possess a fixed mindset and others a growth and this mindset greatly affects how we learn and respond to situations in our life.

“In a fixed mindset students believe that their basic abilities , their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits.  They have a certain amount and that’s that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb.  In a growth mindset students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence.  They don’t necessarily think everyone’s the same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it.”

What are the differences between fixed and growth mindsets?

Thank you to all those parents who attended our Growth Mindset information session. Everyone who attended said that they found it very interesting and they developed an understanding about how mindsets can affect the way we learn. If you didn't get chance to attend, don't worry we will be holding another session in the Autumn Term.  The presentation from the session can be accessed below by clicking on the link.

Growth Mindset Characters

During Growth Mindset week each class designed characters for the different qualities of Growth Mindset. The children worked so hard and really thought about the characters and the qualities they were depicting. These are the amazing winning designs from each class chosen by last year's School Council. They look absolutely fabulous on the wall of the main corridor and are the first thing we see when we come into school on a morning.  They remind us all that we need to use our growth mindsets everyday!
